A632.9.3.RB - Role of Emotion in Decision Making
In this video, Prof. Baba Shiv of Stanford University
speaks to the importance of emotion in decision making, particularly as related
to confidence. After watching this video, reflect on two situations; one, in
which you were extremely confident of the outcome and what your attitude was
towards the subject; and second, a situation in which you were less confident
or not so confident of the outcome. Based on this module's readings and this video
write a reflection blog detailing the situations above and describing the role
emotion played in decision making. Include what emotional reactions you
experienced for each scenario.
My first situation that I was extremely confident of
the outcome and that my attitude was that I could save this second officer ‘s
job at the airlines (United). I was the training officer for this student that
had 10 years in at the airline as a second officer on the Boeing 727 which back
then required a third pilot. The time came when the airline had to upgrade to a
two-pilot aircraft, the new Boeing 737. The second officer had not flown an
aircraft for more then 10 years and this was going to be a challenge for the
training department that I was the lead flight instructor. The student went
thru the training and had a very hard time, so we decided to put this student
thru again. At this time, I was very confident that he would make it thru.
During training I notice that he had a very hard time just flying the simulator
straight and level which I were extremely confident of the
outcome and what your attitude was towards the subject at his experience level
should be easy for the student.
The second situation in which that I was less
confident and wasn’t sure of the outcome would be to continues more training for
the student that was discuss in the paragraph above. After some observation
simulator flights with me and some other instructors for their opinion on this
student. We all agree that more training was not the answer for now and for me
to talk to the student about why he is having so much trouble just flying basic
maneuvers. As the lead flight instructor, I went to bat for this student and
was losing confidence in his ability to learn this new aircraft. After a heart
to heart talk, he then told me why he was having so much trouble in the
simulator. When he was hired over 10 years ago, he lied about his flying
experience to get the job at United. This student had no flying experience at
all and the only reason he was hired is that he new some one in the hiring
department that is no longer employed at United. The student was fired for
lying on his application and sorry to said he would not ever fly again for a
Major airline.
