A632.7.3.RB - Collaborative Decision Making
Reflect on the role of collaboration and getting to
resolution in the process of decision-making. Rarely, if ever, do our decisions
affect only ourselves. Consider the importance of getting other stakeholders
involved; how can they help you make a better decision for all?
Recall a specific situation where you are faced with deciding;
within the context of the information in this module’s reading, describe the
process you went through and the outcome you were seeking. How did stakeholder
involvement help you make a better decision?
If stakeholders were not involved, could they have been? Would that have
led to a better resolution? Did you achieve your objective(s)? Identify 3 ways
you may use this learning experience to make better decisions in the future.
Managing Stakeholders: Too Many Slows Progress, Too
Few Stifles Objectives
I was the lead instructor for CommutAir own by United
Airlines. We had a student that was having a lot of trouble getting thru the
training on the EMB 145 regional jet. The student was just about finish with
the 10 simulators for training that was allowed, which consist of 4 weeks of training
plus ground school. His instructor meets with me and we discuss a plan to let
the student go or should we try some additional training. As the lead
instructor, before I make any decision on this student, I sit in a training
event to see for myself the student performance level. Yes, the student was behind, and I made the
decision to give this student additional training and to change the instructor,
which I felt might be some of the student’s problems.
When I decide to give additional training there is a
process that I must follow which includes stakeholders from the parent company
United. The stakeholders did go along with my decision and approved additional
training for the student. Now it was up to me and the new instructor to get
this student thru the extra training. After the extra training the student did
fine and is now one of our Captain’s.
The first are those most directly impacted by the
problem you are trying to solve
The second is made up of the people who are attempting
to solve the problem
The third category includes those people who could be
solving the problem with you
In business, a stakeholder is usually an investor in
your company whose actions determine the outcome of your business decisions.
Stakeholders don't have to be equity shareholders. They can also be your
employees, who have a stake in your company's success and incentive for your
products to succeed.
